A visible ID tag gives a finder an immediate way to contact you. Keep the information short, readable, and current so someone can act quickly without special equipment.
The essentials
- Your dog’s name or a clear identifier: This can help a finder speak calmly to the dog. Some owners prefer “I’m microchipped” instead of the name.
- Your primary mobile number: Choose the number most likely to be answered.
- A second contact number: Add a trusted person who can help if you are traveling or unavailable.
- Optional: “Microchipped”: This tells a shelter or veterinary clinic to scan for registered details.
What about an address?
A city and state can provide useful context, but a full street address is a personal choice. Space, privacy, and your dog’s travel habits all matter. A current phone number is usually the most important detail for a fast reunion.
Keep it legible
Choose durable engraving with high contrast and enough space between lines. Check the tag regularly for worn lettering, loose rings, sharp edges, and outdated information. Replace it whenever a phone number changes or the text becomes hard to read.
Use layers of identification
A collar tag is visible, while a registered microchip provides permanent identification if a collar is lost. A microchip is not a GPS tracker: it must be scanned, and it only helps when the registry information is current. Ask your veterinarian to scan the chip during routine visits and confirm that the number matches your registration.

About AirTag
Apple states that AirTag is designed for objects, not pets. Do not present it as a substitute for a visible ID tag, registered microchip, secure leash or enclosure, or supervised care.
